Short Film - 15 minutes -
The Scene Of The Crime
Verdict: Short detective thriller
London - December 03
This short detective thriller is about a young married woman Susan Wilton, played by Sarah-Louise Young, who is questioned after her husband and his gay lover are found shot - murdered.
The film has four or five scenes. The style is not so much whodunnit - as this is not apparently in doubt. It's
about how human behaviour and passions can trick us into making false judgements. Including the audience.
Sarah-Louise Young (Susan Wilton) gives a very subtle and natural performance as the suspected murderer, powerfully
suggesting she is defending herself against her husband's lover. It emerges that her father also died of a shot
wound to the head when Susan was younger - in which she was implicated but escaped charges. Emma Taylor plays
her solicitor, Catherine Adams, who deftly deflects this and other revelations - at the core of which lie abuse.
All three performances are natural and well-defined. The lack of close-ups fails to engross us fully in the
journeys of the three characters. Close-ups of emotion and beads of sweat would help add tension.
Susan Wilton is very well played by Sarah-Louise Young, allowing us to feel the vulnerablity of the abused character. And
she is truly believable as each of Wilton's layers are unpeeled. Emma Taylor's performance as Catherine Adams
is made with total conviction. The lack of her dialogue allows her to react in the scene rather than play it, which
she does well. Damian Kell, gives a fine performance although it lacks some danger, and the menance required for the
character to blossom fully.
The Scene Of The Crime captures the imagination. The performances are good. However there is something missing -
occasional flagging of dramatic tension, and some lack of clarity in the telling of the story.
