The Life And Times Of A Wonderwoman
Verdict: Americana dissected
Edinburgh - C Venues - August 03
Who could be more synthetically American than Wonderwoman? But supposing she had a life before. In Terry Newman's play, she does.
'I am Wonderwoman. I am immortal. I am the goddess of your dreams,' announces Tara Hendry, and during the hour of her one-woman show she takes us from Wonderwoman's start among her Amazon sisters in 1200 BC to the sorry state, in Wonderwoman's view - of women today.
It's a journey that involves Americans, comics and tabloid pschologists, as well as Hercules (who didn't smell too good after cleaning out the Augean Stables) and the Trojans. There's ancient history, the classics retold (Helen Of Troy comes across as a bit of a slapper), and the revelation of superhero secrets (Bruce Wayne packed a mighty weapon inside Batman's shorts, adding credibility to the old joke 'The answer's "Cock Robin". What's the question?') (answer below).
Tara Hendry's a fine singer, but today it's speech only, and her delightful voice animates the around 6,000 words of Wonderwoman's narrative and quirky observations. It's a strong, superbly-modulated voice, powerful when needed, at times dropping to a whisper so intimate it risks inaudibility. She moves, dances (and dodges bullets) with grace; and she exudes the sultry beauty necessary to fill Wonderwoman's boots - and excellently rauchy costume.
Credits Performer - Tara Hendry. Director - Michael Eriera. Original Music by Tara Hendry. Stage Manager - Sonia Acheson. Lighting Design - James Whipps. Lighting and Sound Operation - David Illari. Flyer and Programme Design - Richard Cook. Producer - Skullduggery Theatre Company.
