Hamlet
Verdict: Powerful Hamlet from Alaska
Edinburgh - Stableyard, Dalkeith Country Park - August 03
Dalkeith Country Park, Dalkeith. 2pm-4.20pm (15 mins intermission)
The ruined 19th Century traceried conservatory of an historic building provides an atmospheric setting for a startling production of Hamlet - from Alaska.
Looking more like new-age travellers, with dreadlocks, Doc Martens, and broad North-American accents, Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre rapidly demolish stereotypes. With slick direction from bd rogers, the company creates, in the bright sunshine of an unusually hot Edinburgh afternoon, the dark drama that Hamlet demands.
They uses minimal props and costumes. All 16 cast members are on stage for the whole performance - either as part of the scene or becoming props, such as beds, crucifixes, shipa. Dialogue is directed at individuals in the audience with striking effect, creating powerful, interactive theatre. There are touches of humour: Punch-and-Judy-like puppets depict the murder of Hamlet's father.
Strong performances from the whole cast include bd rogers as Polonius, lovingly carrying a piece of wood; Eugenia Andruchowicz's fragile and passionate Ophelia; Jake Waid's angst-filled, vengeful and haunted Hamlet; Scott Jackson's sexy Horatio.
Cast Credits (alpha order): Jeffrey D Aldrich, Eugenia Andruchowicz, James Bartlett, Jesse Bartlett, Jon-Kiefer Bowne, Andrew Cassel, Rebecca Eddy, Scott Jackson, Shawn Law, Jeff Neppl, Tom Robenolt, bd rogers, Carey-Taylor Seward, Jessica Storck, Parker Thompson, Jake Waid
