The Dusty Limits Hour
Verdict: A master of cabaret
Edinburgh - Holyrood Tavern - August 03
Fri, Sat, 10pm (1hr), Holyrood Tavern, Venue 84, 9a Holyrood Road (bottom of The Pleasance at junction of St Mary's and Holyrood Road
(Sun-Thur Dusty Limits hosts The Bongo Club)
Dusty Limits sings cabaret, and a whole lot more. Rather than just a singer - which he is, excellently - he's more of a phenomenon. In his own quiet, understated way.
The outrageous Dusty Limits is doing a couple of nights a week at the Holyrood Tavern (just down the hill from The Pleasance), and the rest of the time at The Bongo Club. One for the diary, a blissful night of decadent cabaret.
It's a rare joy to hear Cole Porter, supreme lyricist, updated and refreshed. Yet that's what this remarkable performer achieves. Deftly tampering with the master (lots of jokes in that vein in Dusty's camp show), Dusty Limits reinvigorates the words and styling of two of Porter's classics (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love).
He applies the same gifted sense of scan, timing, lyric and topicality to Dr Doolittle - the superb If We Could Talk To Americans.
Dusty Limits provides a feelgood hour of premier Weimar, bang up to date. It's the real thing: not a warming up of an old formula, but a reinvention of the art of cabaret for the 21st century by a performer of great humour, fine voice, and rare élan.
Songs. Sam, You Made The Pants Too Long. Mad About The Boy (Noel Coward). I Will Follow Him. The Kleptomaniac (Hollander). Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (Cole Porter)? Don't Smoke In Bed (Goodbye Old Sleepyhead). People (Streisand). If We Could Talk To Americans (If We Could Talk To The Animals, Dr Doolittle). Nature Boy (To Love And Be Loved In Return) (Eden Abez). Let's Do It - Let's Fall In Love (Cole Porter).
Credits. Performance - Dusty Limits. Piano - John Patterson. Door - Andrew Wilson.
