Abomination
Verdict: Redeeming playground friendship
Edinburgh - C Venues - August 03
Bullied at school? Prepare for flashbacks.
Schoolgirl Martha (Verity Hewlett) is picked on because she's different (writes Lea Harris). Scott (Adam Ward)'s the new boy who falls in with Simon (Milenka James) and his gang. He can't understand why they bully and chase poor Martha round the playground, teasing and tormenting her. Scott befriends her.
Together they face the bullies - not only the ones in the playground, but also
in her dreary home. Confiding in Scott, Martha tells him her terrible secret.
This is a story of how friendships can help change what seems an impossible
situation. It takes courage to tell someone about being abused. And if
an adult can't help because there's no proof, a 12-year-old best friend might have the solution. Abomination exemplifies 'a trouble shared'. There are
masterly performances from the 3-strong cast (and remarkable physical energy).
Adam Ward has the nuances of a gangly 12-year-old boy to a T. It's touching,
humorous and poignant. And a must for parents of not-quite teenagers.
