NEWSREVUE

Verdict: News-based sketch comedy

London - Canal Café Theatre

Run of 24 July - September 03

NewsRevue website

NewsRevue parodies current affairs. It's written by a team of about 30 writers. There are four actors, a musical director (pianist) and a director, who change every 6 weeks.

The current team are: actors (alpha order): Alex Constantine, Ben Enwright, Rachel Heaton, Theresa Lawrence. Musical Director (pianist) - Anthony Strong. Director (start of run) - Rhonwen McCormack. Director (middle of run) - Andrew Byron. Director (end of run) - Jack Rebaldi.

Tonight's topics include: Why Buy Celebrity Lifestyle? (song to American Pie), American remake of Father Ted, school exams, Posh and Becks, Carol Caplin, civil panic in America, Dull House (song about Big Brother to Our House), Stephen Hawking's lapdance visit, Jeffrey Archer's prison memoires, Duke and Duchess of Wessex, Barry White's death, conjoined twins at head - PM Blair and spokesman Campbell, President Bush addressing nation, Tim Henman, Middle East ceasefires, Terminator 3, Frankenstein in the Middle East, embryo song (All I Want Is A Womb Somewhere), John McEnroe, suicide bombers in Heaven, Anthony Andrews overdosing on water, Iraqi Information Minister, Goodbye Former Dean (C of E gay bishop resigns), PM Blair and Mrs Blair, Charles Kennedy's Angels, conjoined twins PM Blair and President Bush, Narrowvision TV, freed farmer Tony Martin, IDS party political broadcast, Tony Blair The Musical (to songs from Oliver).

It's an interesting show, fine performances from a strong cast. Alex Constantine does a fine Tim Henman, a sharp satire of PM Blair - scraping slime from the surface of the Prime Minister's character to glimpse the pus below - and gifted John McEnroe. Ben Enwright delivers a worryingly accurate President Bush and highly entertaining Iraqi Information Minister spinning for PM Blair. Rachel Heaton portrays a spot-on Kirsty Wark and radiant angel - makes heaven look fun, glorious singing too. Theresa Lawrence gives a superb Posh, Carol Caplin, the stripper who didn't have sex with Steven Hawking, and many other excellent characterisations - and superb singing voice. Anthony Strong delivers superb piano, excellently conceived and elegantly delivered.

NewsRevue Writers include (alpha order) - Geoff Aymer, Matt Bates, Martin Baum, Stephen Bessant, Marc Blakewill, Liz Bower, Chris Bryant, Andrew Byron, Julian Caddy, Simon Carter, The Cast, Chandrika Chevli, Noel Christopher, Alex Constantine, John Cowen, Dan Davies, Andy Fleming, Barry Grossman, Christopher Hale, James Harris, Tracy Ingham, Paul Jones, Rupert Keenlyside, Carol Kentish, James Lamont, Darren Lee, Emma Leon, Philip Lunn, Matt Malone, Josie Melia, Terry Franks Newman, Jason Oscar, Simon Ounsworth, Jason Peck, Ben Pheazey, Stuart Piper, Barney Power, John Random, Jeremy Rommer, Jason Smart, Alan Stafford, Colin Stutt, Mike Tier, Tanya Tier, Nicola Willett, Jake Wilson, Ron Winkworth, Ben Wright.
