THEATRE IN THE POUND (TIT-£)

Verdict: 5 fringe shorts for £1

London - Cockpit Theatre - Thur 20 March 03

Cockpit Theatre

Theatre in the £ (TIT-£) is a monthly evening of fringe shorts, with all tickets at £1. A typical evening starts 7pm, ends 10.30pm, with 6 acts 20 minutes long, a couple of intervals, and a licensed bar. It's a chance for writers and actors to try out their work, and audiences to see a selection of acts which may vary from the terrible to the magnificent: a feature of this glorious evening is that there's no control of content by the theatre. (But no jugglers - the Cockpit's great set of expensive lights is over the stage).

On this night - five pieces, the third with review notes:

Love Rescue Me. (report from programme note): 'Writer - Roger Brint. Directed and performed by - Mathew Brint and Catherine Toomey. He returns home having travelled the world to broaden his horizons and search for something. All he has to do now is to convince his estranged ex that he is, and always was, the man for her. Exciting new writing with a twist in the tail.'

The Gift. (report from programme note): 'Writer - Scilla Fernandez. Director - Karen Tomlin. Performers - Kate Alderton, Karina Fernandez, Steve Hallam, Alex Belcourt. Christmas 1814, thousands of Joanna's faithful followers wait expectantly for her to give birth to the Son of God. Miracle or madness? Extracts from a full-length play inspired by the life of Joanna Southcott 1750-1814.'

Metanoia: (review notes JP 20/3/03): Writer Mark Fahey. Director - Mark Fahey. Performers - Danira Govich, Liam Smith. Nadia and her husband are getting dressed, she's pregnant. They repeat each other's speech with variation, alienated. Their plans, ambitions, confessions, secrets are revealed. It's a powerful study of estrangement, emphasised by their never standing together - diagonally opposite on stage, and marriage. The shadow of miscarriage forms an overriding metaphor of disintegration.

Borderline. (report from programme note): 'Writer - Lisette Baruch. Director - Sarah Wolf. Performers - Amanda Orton, Andrew Taylor, Michael Schillinger. World War 2 drama set in Nazi Germany examines the relationship of 3 people caught between their desperate need to survive and their need for acceptance and love.'

The Actress. (report from programme note): 'Writer / Director - Gareth Pilkington. Performer - Maggie Robson. The story of an actress rather down on her luck, who is forever trying to get a man, and accosts them in cafés. She gets more than she bargained for.'
