THEATRE IN THE POUND (TIT-£)
Verdict: 3 fringe shorts for £1
London - Cockpit Theatre - Thur 20 February 03
Theatre in the £ (TIT-£) is a monthly evening of fringe shorts, with all tickets at £1. A typical evening starts 7pm, ends 10.30pm, with 6 acts 20 minutes long, a couple of intervals, and a licensed bar. It's a chance for writers and actors to try out their work, and audiences to see a selection of acts which may vary from the terrible to the magnificent: a feature of this glorious evening is that there's no control of content by the theatre. (But no jugglers - the Cockpit's great set of expensive lights is over the stage).
On this night - three pieces, the first a report, the other two with review notes:
First Born. (report from programme note): ‘The son of a celebrity tries to defend his father’s newly-discovered internet crimes. A story of the power of myth and music.’ Cast - Adam Moss (rehearsed reading, on minidisk). Writer / Director - (Writer in Residence TIT-£) David Erdos.
Panda Eyes 4 (Remains of the Panda). Two American men in anoraks and hats try to sleep on a hunting mission. They’re in pursuit of Choo-Choo, the possibly mythological wild giant panda. Thomas Crowe’s enigmatic as Lyle, the keeper of panda lore and dark secrets generally. Steve Wilson plays dumb hunter Dan, with a touch of Deliverance (without hillbilly-buggery), pining for his gorgeous Esme back home. It’s one of a series. As Lyle bites Dan’s bullet (but nothing else) in this episode, it may be the last. Writer - Steve Wilson. Directed / Performed - Thomas Crowe, Steve Wilson.
Desire Caught By The Tail. Two girls with wild pig-tails display Picasso’s hidden masterpiece. Cast (alpha order): Lindsay Gear, Viktoria Knoblauh. Writer - Pablo Picasso. Director - Liana Potila. Company - ETAP.
