THEATRE IN THE POUND

Verdict: 5 fringe shorts for £1

London - Cockpit Theatre - 19 December 02

Cockpit Theatre

Theatre in the £ is a monthly evening of fringe shorts, with all tickets at £1. A typical evening starts 7pm, ends 10.30pm, with 6 acts 20 minutes long, a couple of intervals, and a licensed bar. It's a chance for writers and actors to try out their work, and audiences to see a selection of acts which may vary from the terrible to the magnificent: a feature of this glorious evening is that there's no control of content by the theatre. (But no jugglers - the Cockpit's great set of expensive lights is over the stage).

On this night, the performances were (actors are in alpha order within each piece):

Trio. A dance by three children: Allana, Barbara and Satta.

Coming of Age. Hilary Sesta. It would be rude to speculate on the delightful Hilary Sesta's age, safe to say the free bus pass may have been a companion for some years. A speculum (surprisingly) doesn't feature in this lively set, age does, and there's a lot of enjoyable rudeness (especially cunt). Cunt, in fact, forms the apex of a hierarchy of formerly rude words now made eminently respectable by this eminently respectable lady. Recalling her moment of linguistic liberation in the audience of The Vagina Monologues, Sesta reveals: 'We shouted out "Cunt" with that Maureen Lipman. And she advertised British Telecom.' It's a joyful, well-written, well-acted piece about shockability, perception of age, the beauty of the body, taboos, and - cunt.

In Your Company. Writer - David Erdos. Short play in 2 parts. In one, a man (David Erdos) imagines visiting a prostitute (Hanna Merring). In the other, the prostitute imagines the man's visit.

The Best of The Day. Writer, director, performer - Katy Slater. 'There's a rat in me hood what am I going to do?'

Dog. Writer - Stephen Berkoff. Cast - Stuart Blackburn.
