Plat du Nuit: The Comeback Special Tour

London venues - Winter 02

(work in progress)

They've played Banstead, they've played Sutton Snooker Club. But those were the glory days. Wheelchair-bound old-un Keys McAlpine wants to re-form the disastrous duo Plat du Nuit, but sex-symbol dodgy singer Teddy Dish isn't convinced. And weasily agent unseen Phil Broom could drive a wedge between them.

It's a comeback gig with a difference. Most comebacks assume there's a gold-standard in the past. But Teddy and Keys, as they'd be the last to admit, are a talent-free zone. In the best comic tradition, it's a fact of which they're grossly unaware.

This (fortunately) doesn't stop them performing. The perils of accommodation - at the mercy of unseen Catford hotel supremo Powers Longo, are celebrated in the ballad Driftbridge Hotel. There's a superb twisted love-song 'Windshield Lover' about Teddy's love affair with a pedestrian he's just 'skittled' while driving home.

The duo write a melodrama. Even with no expense spared on costumes, Venus Fly-Trap: The Musical, was unlikely to grow wings. But leading fly Prince Theolonius and wheelchair-bound flytrap Queen Tutenlectra give it their best shot.

In its present format, Plat du Nuit's a set of songs linked to a loose narrative thread. Jim Johnson plays the pianist Keys McAlpine - and the piano. Adam Riches is singer Teddy Dish. The show's in development for Edinburgh 03 and touring London venues. Tigco Productions.
