MAKING JUICE: THE MAKING OF JUICE

(10-minute short film)

Verdict: Hilarious Sci-Fi spoof

Charlie Productions Ltd

'All filmmakers make films sure, - but the Blaine brothers have made this one'. Juice is a film about a film you might never wish to see - probably the worst science fiction movie out of this world.

Fresh from their triumph 'Skin up for Hitler', enfant-terrible film-makers Ben and Chris Blaine (played by Ben and Chris Blaine) take us squirt-by-squirt through the genesis of Juice, filmed for blue-screen in a Wandsworth warehouse.

'I'm finding the going a little hard: making the transition from TV to cinema: the screen's a lot smaller', explains actor Damian Kell (Damian Kell), playing goodie Captain Haverstock. It's part of Haverstock's manly mission to swallow the emission of evil blue-faced Dr Scorpion. ('Receive my juice'/'Never'). Can Silverstar (Emily Stone) intervene, or at least burst out of her costume designed by Clint Goncalves from 2 metres of cheap silver material?.

Emily Stone (Emily Stone) is busy being wired for sound - intimately - by Alex (Sound Recordist). 'How does that feel?'/'Fine'/'Give me a level'/'Does that work for you?' (pause)/'Er, I actually need you to be talking'.

Dr Scorpion is mounting Captain Haverstock and forcing juice from a bottle down his throat. Actor: 'What if I said I wouldn't do it?' Director: 'You're the hero, give it a try'.

It's Slate 233 Take 16. Action. It's a wrap. There's a storm brewing between fictitious leading man, choking and juiced-out, and director. Director: 'You walk away. All film-makers make junk. It's a visceral metaphor'. The last word's from presenter Carl Pizzie: 'That was movie magic: see you next time'.

Making Juice: The Making of Juice draws on the talents of 5 fine professional actors. Garth Maunders as the blue-headed Dr Scorpion is funny and a fully realistic sci-fi villain; he doubles as Garth Maunders's fictitious twin-brother Director of Photography and interplays the two superbly.

Damian Kell is sublime as a bolshie actor ('My throat's constricted, the liquid's choking me'. Director: 'This is good') and the farcical Captain Haverstock; he gives a exactly nuanced performance to each role that maximises the comic effect - the result is hilarious.

Carl Pizzie, as presenter Ashley Campell, delivers a warmly engaging characterisation. His role encloses the film in a neat, professional and very funny package, a fine piece of acting that underscores the production.

Simon Poole delivers an excellent voice-over to the film, giving it a continuity that the visual assembly of shots must necessarily lack at times, due to the nature of the material. It's relaxed, it's subtle, it's very funny.

Emily Stone as Silverstar, and as the actor who plays her, is breathtaking. She has the gift of making every gesture a comic delight, each inflection of her finely-modulated voice a cue for a laugh. She delivers a lyrically sexy performance, subtle in its construction, riotous in its effect.
