drinks Monday 1 September 08 Edinburgh Reunion in London
Topping And Butch Hit Leicester Square 26-27 September 08
Danny Bhoy
Verdict: Naughty Bhoy.
Edinburgh - Pleasance Cabaret Bar - August 2002
There's a delightful spirit of naughtiness twinkling through
Danny Bhoy's splendid set, that allows quite mature ladies
not to choke on their sausages when he's talking about, er,
cock-sucking.
One thing's for certain, the must-have accessory for
Fringe-goers this season is the whisky-flavoured condom.
Freely available from Edinburgh's Royal Mile gift shops,
each 'Mc Condom' ('The authentic taste of Scotland'), says Bhoy,
contains 0.3% alcohol. According to his calculation, you can
still suck 78 cocks and drive, though sucking 2 with
coffee-flavoured condoms won't sober you up.
Some comedians derive from the alternative comedy movement of
20 years ago (and getting a bit stale), but Bhoy's roots are
deeper - it's easy to see him at home in the riotous music
halls, speakeasies and KitKat Clubs of a more timeless
tradition.
He's a born entertainer, recklessly acerbic and quite capable
of taking the piss ruthlessly, but in such a charming way that
he keeps the audience at his side. And in the case
of the perhaps 60 year-old lady above, dining comfortably at
the preview cabaret, without disturbing their digestion.
He takes them on a leisurely meander from his thoughts on
Hadrian's Wall (a pub would have been better to keep the
Scots out), his embarrassing encounter with the Queen
(dead drunk), to giant pencils, his half-Scottish,
half-Indian background, and of course those
condom-vending gift shops.
Written and performed by Danny Bhoy. Technicals at preview by
Rupert Lally.
A hugely enjoyable show.
